However, a new and unexpected report from Spain suggests that the Gunners could still miss out on the Spain international.

According to Diario AS, Real Madrid remain in the race for Zubimendi's signature, as Mikel Arteta's side have yet to finalise any agreement.

With Xabi Alonso now set to replace Carlo Ancelotti as Real Madrid manager, there is still a chance Los Blancos could make a late move for the midfielder.

Alonso is believed to be a long-time admirer of Zubimendi, and that could accelerate a potential attempt to bring him to the Bernabéu.
